Goathland Train Station

Goathland Train Station

I’m thinking of Goathland Train Station. It’s Tuesday night, the half-term school holidays, and I am relaxing in a Holiday Park in Holland somewhere near the German Border.

We put the television on in our Holiday home to find Harry Potter, and “The Order of the Phoenix” on the screen (In English as well – Bonus). We settle down into the evening to watch it and the old brain cogs start whirring…

Goathland Train Station

Hogsmeade Train Station

It was years ago since I watched the movie, well it must have been released back in the 90’s originally, right? “Is this the movie with the Goathland Train Station in it”? I thought to myself… Literally 7 miles from Pickering, North Yorkshire.

After a quick google, it turns out it wasn’t this Harry Potter movie, which was a shame as I wanted to see it in the Movie however curious to check Wikipedia for some history.

I couldn’t believe that the Station opened up back in 1865! It certainly has some history behind it. It closed in 1965 only to be reopened again in 1973 as part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).

So, if you are heading to Pickering for a trip away, consider also visiting the Goathland Station and exploring the village itself. It is not that big and you could stop for a cup of tea and a cake in one of the Teashops at the bottom of the village near the Station.

The Mallyan Spout Waterfall in Goathland is definitely worth a look if you like nature and small walks. It’s located behind the Mallyan Spout Hotel at the top of the Village. Look for the path to the right-hand side of the hotel. It has some steep (can be muddy) steps, so not ideal if you aren’t too mobile or in a wheelchair.

Summary

If you like the countryside, trains, the North Yorkshire Moors, sheep, afternoon tea, and more – check out Goathland and its Train station.

Regardless of whether you actually visit the Station or not – Goathland is a beautiful Village that is totally unique and worth seeing if you are new to the area and haven’t had the pleasure previously or meeting some of the local residents (above).
